were deliberately starved to death in Ukraine
1932-1933

Categories Using historical facts of the 1932-33 Holodomor in Ukraine, you may choose to write in any of the following categories:

  • Historical short fiction
  • Historical research essay
  • Poetry or lyrics for a song
  • Interview or biography with survivor
  • Skit or drama

Prizes sponsored by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress

  • 1st prize - $700.00
  • 2nd prize - $500.00
  • 3rd prize - $300.00
  • Five honourable mentions at $100.00 each

Format

  • Language: English or Ukrainian
  • Word length: 1,000-2,500 for manuscripts and 500 for poems
  • Spacing – double for essays, single for poetry
  • Page number and title must appear at the top of each page
  • Printed on one side of 8 1/2 x 11 white paper, 1” margins
  • Submit two copies, one paper copy and one electronic copy in pdf format
  • Your name should NOT appear anywhere on your submission, other than your cover letter and release form

Eligibility

  • Age category – 14 to19 years of age
  • Must be resident of Canada
  • Entries must be received/postmarked no later than Oct. 21, 2013
  • May not be the collective work of more than one author
  • Must include rough copies or outlines from inception to final submission
  • Entries must be originals and unpublished at the time of submission
  • Research essays must include footnotes and bibliography
  • Entries will not be returned
  • One entry per competitor

Competition release form (download here):

  • Must be completed, including parental or guardian signature.
  • All entries will be judged anonymously (the names of students during the judging process willnot be known to the judges)
  • Decision of judges will be final

Submission must include

  • a signed copy of the attached release form
  • a cover letter with the following information:
    • title,
    • category,
    • full name,
    • address,
    • phone number,
    • name of attending school
    • current grade

The National Holodomor Education Committee reserves the right not to award a prize or any prizes when submissions do not meet competition standards or criteria.

Winning entries as well as honourable mentions may be published in English or Ukrainian newspapers, magazines, web sites, or other media.

Winners will be recognized during the Holodomor Memorial Day commemorative events, on November 23, 2013.
